    Expert view

The spirit of social service is important

    Dr. Awadhesh Sharma

Parivartan is a doctor at the Center for Mental Health, Delhi. Nowadays, through the program 'Mann Ki Baat' broadcast on Doordarshan, people are awakening to mental illnesses.

The number of mental patients is likely to be the highest in the world after cardiac patients by 2020-21. The main reasons for this are increased competition, stressful life, unhealthy routines, lack of sleep, disintegrating household and family, and increased consumption of drugs. Apart from this, psychiatrists are still found in developed countries like America, but there is a famine of such doctors in India. Here the ratio of such doctors is being applied 1:10 per patient, which is quite low in today's time. This is the reason that career prospects will increase considerably in the coming times in this field. Excerpts from a conversation with Dr. Awadhesh about this:

What is the difference between a Psychiatrist and a Psychologist?

Students pursuing MBBS degree can become Psychiatrists, while students studying MA or MSc Psychology can become Psychologists. Both are professional doctors. The only difference is that the psychiatrist can also give medicines to cure mental diseases, but the psychologist has not yet been given this right. Yes, he can consult the patient and advise him to take medicine from a good psychiatrist.

What major things should be kept in mind while preparing youth for a career in Psychology?

It is very important to have the spirit of social service in you. It has often been seen that people associated with this area become patient after solving problems of others, or they leave their practice in between. They should face every situation easily and patiently, not believing themselves to be God. Apart from this, like every profession, it is also necessary to have true dedication, hard work, self-confidence and a desire to touch the sky. If you want to become a skilled doctor or counselor, then it would be better for regular studies, so that you can also become a master of practical training. If you want to teach or provide your services in a company, then, of course, this course can also be done by correspondence.

    Success story

    Inspiration from a mental patient

    Dr. Aruna Bruta, renowned psychologist
Dr. Aruna Bruta is a retired professor of Delhi University. She is one of the first Indian women who, since 1966, have tried to spread the importance of psychology and psychiatry to the masses through All India Radio and Doordarshan. These days she is offering her services in an organization called Ken. According to Dr. Bruta, when I was only 8-10 years old, the inspiration to become a psychologist came from a 30-year-old psychic patient living in my neighborhood. Seeing his condition, I was determined as a child that I would do anything for social service. I did my BA Psychology from IP College, Delhi University. In this, Clinical Psychology was my favorite subject, that's why I did MA Psychology and Ph.D. from the same subject. Later I did a two-year advanced clinical technical course from the University of Wisconsin and specialized courses in Rational Emotive Therapy at Albert Ellis.

Apart from this, I have also been the President of the National Academy of Psychology and the Editor of the Journal of Research and Applications in Clinical Psychology. Based on my experience, I can say that money, fame and human welfare are everything in this field. Rest assured, people associated with this subject never remain unemployed.
